Davengere chess club open “Punit Rajkumar cup”, state level chess competition to enhance the performance of players.
A state level chess competition is organized by Davangere chess club in memory of Puneet Rajkumar on Dec 3 to Dec 4 at guru Bhawan in the city. Players say this kind of tournament motivates them.
Tarun .T, a state level chess player says, “this kind of tournaments, motivate and will bring a good name for state.” The winner of tournament will be awarded with “Puneet Rajkumar trophy” and one lakh rupees.
Tournament will be inaugurated by MLA Shamanur shivashankarappa. Chess Instructors believe this kind of tournaments enhance competitiveness among the players and motivates them.
Yuvraj T, chess instructor, said “first time this kind of event is organized in the city; this enhances the competition and motivates players to perform well.” The tournament will be held in nine rounds and more than 200 contestants from different districts of Karnataka will participate in it.
Arvind shastry, secretary of Karnataka chess association, said “previously we have to go to the other states to play such tournaments but now we have them in state only.” After over a decade of inactivity Karnataka has now succeeded to get winners like Pranav Anand , Charvi Anilkumar, International master(IM) and grandmaster(GM) annexed the world boys under 16 and girls under-8 championship titles in September. Experts say the recent wins could perhaps provide better avenues in terms of sponsorship which is a healthy sign for growing sports.
