There were around 1000 cases that were booked for drunk driving when Bangalore’s traffic police conducted a special drive on 22nd and 23rd February.

Pradeep Kumar T.R., Head Constable of Malleshwaram Traffic Police Department said, “Last month drunk driving cases declined. However, accidents caused by drunk driving increased, so we had a doubt. Now we will conduct the drive regularly — every week in all main roads of Bangalore.”
Kumar added that in Malleshwaram area, the traffic police registered over 20 cases.

Gangoji Rao, an auto rickshaw driver said, “Two days ago a friend of mine was caught by police and his license was cancelled. I am a regular auto driver, I see people drunk driving every day.” He asked for the Police to be more active and arrest such people regularly.

Police informed that the highest cases were reported in Western Bangalore (475) Division, followed by Eastern Division and Northern Division.

Ramesh R, Traffic expert has asked for regular drives to be conducted, instead of weekend checks. He said, “Police should conduct special drives regularly, or atleast twice in a week. Police should conduct drives in educational institutions as well.” He added, “Government should increase the fines and make more strict laws to decrease the drunk driving cases.”
