Road construction work in Gundappa Street, Chickpet, Bengaluru is going on for the last eight months. The wholesale market of the area is highly affected by this delay in construction.

S.Srinivas, a local shopkeeper and owner of a wholesale business of bananas in Chickpet said, -“The construction work is going on for last eight months and due to this my business is very slow. The number of customers is drastically reduced. The irregular work has become a problem for all the shopkeepers.”

There has been a loss of total of Rs.18-20 lakhs in the market.  The shopkeepers claimed that earlier they used to earn Rs. 70000 to 80000 per month which has now reduced to Rs. 15000 to 20000 per month for the last seven to eight months.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike blames The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board for the delay in the construction, as there was a problem of sewage pipeline leakage in the street.  BBMP Chief Engineer said, “BWSSB was laying a new sanitary pipeline which took five months to complete, this has led to the delay in the white topping work.”

On the contrary, sanitary submain Assistant Executive Engineer, BWSSB, Mr. Ramesh said, “There has no work been taken up by us… BWSSB is not laying any sanitary pipeline. This work was taken by BBMP.”

Shashi Kumar, HOD of Civil Engineering Department, Vivekananda Institute of Technology, said, “The lack of co-ordination between the departments has led to this problem because of that the local shopkeepers and residents have to suffer. There should be proper communication and co-ordination between both the departments before taking up any project.”
