Licenses not only canceled but also suspended for 3 months.
Rajajinagar traffic police station canceled 138 licenses of drink and driving cases last evening. The total number of cases registered under the charge is 31500 across the city.
The total number of licenses under suspension in drink and driving case is 211 that include 79 licenses of zone RTOs respectively. The 138 licenses canceled have been suspended for 3 months.
- Ramesh, Traffic Police Inspector, “So we have canceled 138 licenses in drink and driving case in which 77 cases are kept under suspension, 27 in Yashvathpur RTO and altogether from different branch RTO total 138 licenses are under suspension the rest will soon follow up and cancel.”
The police had seized 5-10 vehicles under the same charges. The major sections imposed are sections 337 and 338 of IPC.
Imtiaz, the auto driver said, “Day before yesterday my auto was seized under drink and driving, they have taken my license and given charge sheet, now I have to pay the fine amount in the court.”
As per the new amendments of Motor Vehicle Act penalties for drunk and drive is Rs.10, 000 and/or up-to 6 months imprisonment for the first time offense, and for the second time offense, it’s Rs.15, 000 and/or imprisonment of up to 2 years.
“People are being very irresponsible these days, drink and driving cases are very common but sometimes it leads to heavy penalties for life.
According to me the fine amount for the charge should be increased and I agree on the suspension of the license by traffic police.” says traffic expert Guru Prasad.
The remaining licenses are to be suspended soon, RR Nagar sub-inspector confirmed.
