Only 30 per cent of people aged between 18 and 19 years are on the voters’ list indicates data from the Chief Electoral Office.

Prakash Nittali, the CEO at the Chief Electoral Office, Bangalore, said, “Of Karnataka’s total population, 3.22 per cent is between the ages of 18 and 19. Of this population, only thirty per cent is on the voters list.”

A number of students say that they don’t apply because it’s a long process and is time consuming.
Shanmuga Priya, a student, said, “Most of us do not apply because it is a long process. Also, we cannot miss our classes and go for the form-filling.”

Ranjitha Babu, another student added, “I applied for voters ID last year. I haven’t received it yet. I have visited the office more than ten times. They say that it is not ready yet.”

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has started a three-day drive for enrolling voters. However, they are not able to get more youngsters to apply.

The BBMP is also visiting schools and colleges this year to create awareness among students above 18 asking them to apply for voters ID.

Those who will be 18 years and above on January 1, 2019 can visit their nearest BBMP ward office to apply. Students and other citizens can apply for their ID by filling Form 6. They must also submit photocopies of proof of residence, age and a passport size photograph.

The voters ID is issued by the Election Commission of India which gives the holder the right to vote. It also serves as an identification proof.
