Call for Seizing 980 Building worries people

An order was passed on September 19 to survey the illegal construction. After which the BBMP informed the Karnataka High Court on 18th November that there are about 980 illegal buildings in the city.

Ankush Tripathi, resident of Chandra layout said, ”BBMP has filed to seize our home. We are living here for so long. If they seize our home we’ll not have anywhere to stay. We don’t have any other house to go in.”

The highest number of illegal buildings is in the south zone, which has 274 constructions, Mahadevapura zone with 176, Yelahanka, RR Nagar with 136 and 100 constructions respectively.

BBMP Pro said, “People are not our responsibility. Owners are responsible for them. They violated the building bye-laws and constructed their buildings illegally. This is the reason the buildings are getting demolished.“

The owners have appealed to the courts for relief. Currently, 1129 cases are pending for adjudication In the City civil High court.

Ankit Venkatesh, a lawyer at City Civil Court said, “There is no track in terms of BBMP catching hold. If the BBMP has issues the matter has gone up to the court for their proceedings.”

BBMP says that punishment is still to be given under section 321-B on Officers who have failed to deviate the constructions. It has given a list of 980 illegal building to the Court a waits for the order of their demolition.
